I Kept the Trunk and Grew Up!

By March 18, 2016 No Comments

I still remember that day when I told my parents I was moving back up to LA after living in Orange County for 8 years. I wanted everything brand new. The move was my responsibility, so I knew there would be a few extra nightshifts as a nurse to get the bed set I wanted. Once I earned, I saved, I purchased. It was 2001; Pottery Barn was THE place to buy furniture. I mean if you were not shopping there or Z Gallery- you were not cool. I decided to buy this country style bed set with a matching desk to make my new move to LA a good one. I loved this furniture set; it came complete with a trunk, two bed side tables, and a bed frame from heaven. I felt very grown up.

As I approach my second week in my third trimester, I have had to make some big girl decisions. Do I keep the bed set or sell it? Naturally in my cottage home in Hollywood, space is an issue. I listed the bed set on Craig’s list. I pretended no one would want the set, and proceeded to shop for the nursery of my dreams.

Two weekends from this date, I found myself shopping on 3rd street Promenade and wandered into Restoration Hardware Baby. Of course I had the very same feelings that I once had buying the bed set 15 years ago. I wanted it all. This time, I purchased it all right then and there. “What did I do?” I thought, my girlfriend stroked my back, and said “At least you will have a chic nursery, and Jack will love it”.

I came home laid on the couch, and wondered what “buyer’s remorse” I had committed, and wondered what am I to do with that wonderful bed set I had owned through the best years of my adulthood? My husband walked through the door, listened to me rant about my purchases, and had admitted that some couple there in fact wanted to buy my bed set. Happy I thought I would be, but sad a little inside. I told him, “they can have everything but the trunk.”

Cut to today- Today I watched a lovely couple who has just graduated from college and ready to take on LA leave my current home with a bed set that has made me happy for many years. I turned to my husband, and said I am excited to start this new chapter with you. He smiled, I said- “let’s make the best room for our son”.

I will tell him about that bed set.
